When Martha was diagnosed with autism in early childhood, I didn't know what to expect. I quickly educated myself on all of the educational treatments: floor-time, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and applied behavioral analysis. We did them all.
What I didn't know in those early days was that after high school graduation, all those supports are pretty much over. Whew. How can that be?
In VT, supports are based on individualized needs assessments and then put into action. But where do you gather with friends?
'Sharing is caring' was our family mantra for many years, based off Barney, the purple dinosaur. Martha still sings every song and enjoys the love of friends, family and neighbors. Her music and movie choices have changed but her love of sharing and caring remains.
As we honor Martha's Uncle Lenny's legacy and the legacy of Martha's namesakes, YiaYia Martha and YiaYia Emma we are excited to put our family values into action for Martha's friends and neighbors.
